Man, I used to geek out hard. When the internet showed up into our lives back in the late ’90s, it felt like magic. I’d sit at my desk for hours after work, staring at a glowing screen, diving into guitar tabs or niche blogs, and the world suddenly felt a whole lot bigger. Fast-forward to today, and we’re standing on the edge of another seismic shift: AI. And if you’re Gen X like me, you might be wondering: “Great, another tech hurdle.” But here’s the thing: just like we leveraged the internet to open doors back then, we can…

Two things opened my eyes this week: First, I learned retirement might actually damage your brain. Second, I realized most Gen Xers are falling behind faster than I thought. For years, retirement sounded like the dream: cruise around in a golf cart sipping craft brews, blasting some Jimmy Buffett, and finally saying goodbye to office politics. But some research reveals a darker side—retirement may speed up cognitive decline. Memory. Focus. Problem-solving. All at risk the moment you check out. And let’s be honest: the golf cart joyride isn’t quite as cool if you can’t remember how to drive it. And…

According to wiki, a normal ten minute shower uses as much as 60 gallons of water. This means that the water tank of an boat or an RV(*) will be exhausted after a single shower. Therefore we’ll have to adopt to some kind of Navy shower. The thing I don’t like about Navy showers is having to turn the water off again to soap up. I’m just not ready for that kind of self-imposed discomfort in the morning. Thus I have devised a different kind of system. (*) DW has been quite resistive about the Tumbleweed homes but surprisingly accepting…

Having a job you love is a wonderful goal. Having passion for your work and enjoying what you do is something most would agree is something to strive toward. Today’s post is a contribution for the annual Job Action Day. The theme is inspired by Mike Rowe’s online commencement speech for Prager University. “He suggests, instead of following their passion, jobseekers should consider following the opportunities that are available to them—and then bring their passions with them to the job.” Have you consciously identified a need to have passion for your work vs. considering your job a practical necessity? Do you let your bias regarding this impact your…

One must save to retire, because savings transfer purchasing power from the present to the future and in order to stop working one must have claims on future goods. That much is obvious (if not, read this post). Since such claims are dollar denominated, the purchasing power is set by the supply and demand of dollars vs the supply and demand of goods. That should be obvious too. A person’s ability to retire will thus be determined by his relative wealth(*). In other words, how much money does the person have relative to other people, and how much money does…
